🍎 A Healthy Day Out for MindChamps @ Bishan
The Healthy Living Learning Journey for MindChamps @ Bishan was held at the iconic Jewel Changi Airport, turning its spacious indoor walkways and lush greenery into a living classroom. Instead of learning about healthy habits from a worksheet, the children experienced them through real movement, guided activities and practical demonstrations.
From warm-up games and body awareness activities to nutrition discussions and hydration reminders, our little champs spent the day discovering what it means to care for their bodies in fun, simple and memorable ways.
🎯 Learning Goals for the Healthy Living Journey
This programme was designed to support key outcomes for young children:
- Understand the basics of a healthy lifestyle – food, movement, rest and hygiene
- Build body awareness: “What does my body need to stay strong and happy?”
- Practise simple healthy routines they can use at home and in school
- Develop social skills through group games and partner activities
- Gain confidence moving safely in a large public space like an airport
👋 Warming Up Our Bodies & Brains
The day began with light stretches and movement games in one of Jewel’s open indoor spaces. Children followed simple instructions such as “reach up high”, “touch your toes”, “twist gently” and “march on the spot”.
These warm-ups helped them:
- Wake up their muscles after the bus ride
- Understand that movement is important for a healthy body
- Practise listening carefully and following multi-step instructions
🥕 Talking About Food & Fuel
Using picture cards and simple examples, facilitators showed the children different types of food – fruits, vegetables, proteins, whole grains and occasional treats. They talked about how:
- Healthy foods give us energy to walk around Jewel and explore
- Too many sugary snacks can make us feel tired and cranky
- Water is one of the most important things our body needs every day
Children were encouraged to share what they had for breakfast and identify which items were “everyday energy foods” and which were “sometimes foods”.
🚶♀️🚶♂️ Movement in a Real-World Space
One of the best parts of holding this programme at Changi Airport is the opportunity for real, purposeful walking. Instead of “exercise” in a classroom, the children did healthy movement while exploring Jewel.
They:
- Walked in pairs, practising good posture and safe distance
- Climbed gentle slopes and steps as part of the trail
- Noticed how their heartbeat and breathing changed when they moved more
Facilitators reinforced the idea that movement doesn’t always mean sports – walking, climbing, and exploring are also important parts of being active.
🧼 Hygiene & Self-Care Reminders
Being in a busy public space like an airport gave us the perfect opportunity to talk about hygiene and staying well. Children discussed:
- Why we wash our hands before eating
- When we should use hand sanitiser
- Why we cover our mouth when we cough or sneeze
- How to drink enough water throughout the day
These reminders were woven naturally into toilet breaks, snack time and transitions, so that healthy habits felt practical and relevant – not like a lecture.
😊 Check-in With Our Feelings
Towards the end of the journey, the children had a short “feelings check-in”. Sitting together, they were asked simple questions such as:
- “How does your body feel now – tired, excited, calm?”
- “What was your favourite part of today?”
- “What can you do when your body feels tired or cranky?”
This gentle reflection helped them understand that healthy living is not just about food and exercise, but also about listening to our bodies and emotions.
🌟 What Our MindChamps Took Home
By the end of the Healthy Living Adventure at Jewel, the children left with:
- Stronger awareness of what their bodies need – food, water, movement and rest
- Practical experiences they can relate to: walking, stretching, choosing snacks
- Improved social skills from moving and learning in groups
- Confidence navigating a busy but safe public environment
- Happy memories of a day where learning and fun went hand in hand
