🍎 A Healthy Living Journey for Skool4Kidz Punggol
The Healthy Living Learning Journey for Skool4Kidz Punggol took place at the iconic Jewel Changi Airport, where the indoor greenery, wide walkways and open spaces were transformed into an active learning environment.
Instead of sitting in a classroom to talk about “healthy habits”, the children experienced them through real movement, group activities and simple, practical demonstrations that they can easily relate to in their daily lives.
🎯 What We Wanted Children to Learn
This programme focused on helping children:
- Recognise what their bodies need – food, water, rest, movement and hygiene
- Understand that healthy choices help them play, learn and grow better
- Practise safe and purposeful movement in a public indoor space
- Build social skills through team-based games and shared tasks
- Feel confident and proud of taking care of themselves
👟 Warming Up: Moving Our Bodies
We began with simple warm-up actions – reaching, stretching, bending and light marching – in one of Jewel’s open areas. Children followed the facilitator’s lead, copying the movements and giggling as they did.
These warm-ups reminded them that:
- Our bodies feel better when we move and stretch
- Exercise doesn’t have to be complicated – small movements count too
- Listening and following instructions are part of staying safe and healthy
🥗 Talking About Food, Snacks & Energy
Using picture cards and simple questions, the children were introduced to different types of food: fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins and snacks.
Together, they learned that:
- Healthy foods act as “fuel” that helps them walk, climb and play
- Too many sugary snacks may give a short burst of energy but can make them tired later
- Water is one of the most important things our body needs every single day
Many children were excited to share what they like to eat at home and proudly identified their own “healthy favourites”.
🚶♂️ Exploring Jewel Through Active Movement
As they moved through Jewel’s indoor forest paths and viewing areas, the children got to experience how everyday walking can be a form of healthy exercise.
They:
- Walked in lines and pairs, practising safe and considerate movement
- Climbed gentle ramps or steps as part of the route
- Noticed how their breathing and heartbeat changed after more active sections
Facilitators highlighted that staying active doesn’t always mean sports – exploring, walking and climbing are also part of a healthy lifestyle.
🧴 Hygiene & Staying Well in Public Spaces
Being at Changi Airport was also a natural opportunity to discuss hygiene. The children were reminded about:
- Washing hands before eating and after using the toilet
- Using hand sanitiser when soap and water are not nearby
- Covering their mouths and noses when coughing or sneezing
- Drinking water regularly, especially after lots of walking
These messages were gently reinforced during snack breaks and transitions, helping children connect healthy habits to real routines.
🧡 Reflecting on Feelings & Body Signals
Towards the end of the session, the group gathered for a short cool-down. Children sat together and were encouraged to notice:
- “Does your body feel tired, happy, strong or calm?”
- “What helped you feel better today – walking, drinking water, resting?”
- “What healthy habit will you try to remember at home or in school?”
This helped them see that healthy living also includes listening to their bodies and emotions.
